AMMAN, Jordan (Apr. 25, 2024) - The 3rd edition of the Hope and Dreams Sports Festival in Jordan from April 30-May 3 is set to be the largest to date, providing refugee athletes with the opportunity to compete across six sports.
Established by World Taekwondo and the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), the first Hope and Dreams Taekwondo Championships was held in 2022 and only featured Taekwondo before it evolved into the Hope and Dreams Sports Festival. Since the inaugural edition in 2023, hundreds of refugee athletes have taken part and benefited from the power of sport.
The unique event serves to empower refugees and promotes the importance of sport for health and wellbeing, with a particular focus on young people.
In addition to Taekwondo, Basketball, Baseball5, and Badminton, which featured on last year’s programme, the 2025 Hope and Dreams Sports Festival will feature the debut of handball. In addition, Basketball will feature its 3x3 format, and Weightlifting equipment will be donated to the camps, reflecting World Taekwondo and the THF’s commitment to partnering with International Federations to enhance its humanitarian efforts.
World Taekwondo President and THF Chairman Chungwon Choue will be joined by World Taekwondo Council members in welcoming a host of guests from partnering organisations to experience the Hope and Dreams Sports Festival.
Distinguished attendees will include IOC Executive Board member & Jordan Olympic Committee President, HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein; FISU President Leonz Eder; and WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari, among others.
President Choue said: “The Hope and Dreams Sports Festival has become one of the most important events of the year for World Taekwondo and THF, and we are proud that it has grown into an acclaimed multi-sport festival which inspires refugees and young people.
“We are grateful for the support of our partners in expanding this year’s edition to include six sports, which will further strengthen the support of the global sporting community for displaced people."
“We believe this will be another successful edition of the Hope and Dreams Sports Festival, and look forward to witnessing the inspiring stories and talents of hundreds of refugee athletes.”
The Festival will feature demonstrations of each sport at the Azraq and Za’atari Refugee Camps on April 30, followed by Sports competition that will be held at Amman Sports City on May 2 and 3, and will include an Opening and Closing Ceremony.
