AMMAN, Jordan (Nov. 27, 2024) - Taekwondo athletes from the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation’s (THF) Humanitarian Sports Center in the Azraq Refugee Camp have starred at the Jordanian Centers Championships.
This represents a proud moment for the THF, for whom the Azraq Camp serves as one of its key projects in empowering refugees and displaced people through Taekwondo.
A total of 22 athletes from Azraq competed at the Jordanian Centers Championships, which was held on November 20 at Hashemite University and featured 560 participants from 26 centers across Jordan.
Their success culminated in winning the team trophies for the children’s, ages 12-14 and men’s categories.
There were some outstanding individual performances, which helped athletes from the Azraq Camp to earn 21 medals.
Yahya Al Ghotany won gold in the men’s category, and Reem Mohammed Hadros did likewise in the women’s.
There were three gold medallists from the Azraq Camp in under-11 competitions - Asmaa Mohammed Al-Ayoub, Doaa Mohammed Al-Ayoub Reem Mohammed Al-Ali - along with a silver for Sadeem Ali Al-Askar, and 11 medallists in the age 12-14 category including golds for Zein Fahd Al-Ahmad and Raneem Abdel-Nasser Al-Omar.
Hazar Khalaf Al-Hassoun, Aden Ghazi Al-Fahid, Marwa Aliwi Al-Sheikh and Iya Murad Al-Ahmad won silvers in the age 12-14 bracket, and bronzes went to Soad Mohammed Al-Hamd, Bayan Sakher Al-Yassin, Awsaf Adel Dahirij, Masa Mohammed Hadros and Raghad Kamal Al-Ali.
In the youth category, Hajar Daham Al-Saleem clinched a gold medal, and there were silvers for Sham Ahmed Seeran, Ghazal Fahd Al-Ahmad and Tala Ahmed Henidi.
The THF plays a vital role in using the power of Taekwondo to improve refugees’ quality of life and allowing them to pursue their dreams.
It has grassroots projects established in seven countries, and has been recognised within the Olympic Movement as a pioneer and leader in delivering humanitarian activities for the benefit of refugees.
The Azraq Camp is one of its longest-running projects having begun in 2016, and the Humanitarian Sports Center serves to provide opportunities to young refugees and spread the Olympic values.
